Microsoft Office and Exchange 365



Lately I have been working more with Microsofts Cloud offerings and seeing the growing demand for it. When you look at cost and accessibility, it makes sence for small mom and pop operations, mid-sized growing businesses all the way to the enterprise organization when you have uses with multiple devices (computers, tablets, smart phones, etc), company email, and web portals. Having the ability to easily access your email and office applications on the fly is important, whether it is your PC or Mac computer, Windows RT device, iPad, Android phone, Windows Phone, iPhone. I will look at the Office 365 Home Premium edition, Office 365 Small/Midzided versions and Enterprise options including Exchange 365 and AD/AD FS SSO integration options.

The office component off Office 365 gives you the nice option of having all your Microsoft Office components for the users you have and It also give the flexibility of being available and customized for many audiences. If you are a home user, student, teacher or small business, you may just need the very basic components. Today people are always on the go, switching between devices and under other licensing models, has often times forced users to purchase licenses for each device and the requirement to track where these licenses are being used to make sure you say compliant. Office 365 has changed this. You buy it by the user and you cover the devices you are using, while maintaining the latest version of the software.


Office 365 Version Available for home:

Office 365 Home Premium: is just what it says, for the home. Offers the basic office applications needed for home (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Publisher, Outlook) on up to 5 PCs and an additional 5 mobile devices. Costs about $100 a year.


Office 365 Versions Available for Small and Medium Business:

Office 365 Small Business: This is for up to 25 users and offers Basic applications needed by the very small business getting up and going. Access to an online version of Microsoft applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Business class email through Outlook Web Access (OWA), Office mobile apps on Windows Phones, the ability to create your own Public website hosted by the service and 10GB of space for a Team website to bring everyone in your small business together. To keep things running you have 24/7 Phone for critical issues. At $6 a month or $60 a year per user this is a very affordable option for the small business to ht the ground running!

Office 365 Small Business Premium:  offers the same features as Office 365 Small Business and is also for up to 25 users, it also includes the Desktop versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, Access, Publisher and Lync for up to 5 PCs and Macs as well as Mobil apps for iPhone, Android and Windows Phones. This is affordable for the growing business needing more options at $15 a month or $150 a year per user.

Office 365 Midsize Business: For up to 300 Users. This offers all the same options as Small Business and Small Business Premium, but with the added benefits of InfoPath and in-house Active Directory and Single Sign on integration! These added benefits cost $180 a year per user with an annual commitment.

Office 365 solutions for the Enterprise:

In the enterprise environment, Microsoft has made a variety of options available. All of them give you the ability to have Business class email supported by Exchange and active Directory integration with anti-malware and anti-spam filtering, allowing your IT department to concentrate on your core business needs with out the need to worry about your exchange environment. 

Exchange Online

Exchange online comes with all Enterprise offerings, but can also be purchased by itself allowing you to continue to use your current Office application suite. Exchange online offers you the ability to have Business class email for your users in a Microsoft Exchange environment, managed by Microsoft with out you needing to support the server hardware or Exchange server, so you can let the experts at Microsoft manage the exchange backend while you just worry about managing your users and business. With Exchange Online you the ability to control sensitive information and prevent the unwanted people from receiving data they should not have, your Exchange is monitored 24/7, is geographically distributed and is always updated to address new malware and spam threats. This costs about $4/month ($48/year) per user.

Office 365 Enterprise E1

Office 365 Enterprise E1 is for Users on the go who may not have an office but need access to Company information and resources. They have the benefits of Hosted Exchange email, and have the added benefit of Web conferencing, SkyDrive file sharing, Public web hosting, intranet SharePoint sites for you teams, Office Web Apps for employees on the go, Site Mailboxes for groups and projects, access to Office applications on Windows phones (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and Yammer Enterprise. This will cost about $8/month ($96 a year) per user.


Office 365 Enterprise E3

Office 365 Enterprise E3 is a full enterprise offering with all the benefits of Office 365 Enterprise E1 with the addition of Desktop versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, Access, Publisher, Lync and InfoPath for up to 5 PCs per user and Mobile Office Apps not just for Windows phone, but also iPhone and Android phones. It also adds advanced email functions  such as Information Rights Management, archiving and legal hold capabilities with unlimited storage. You also get added compliance tools that let you search across Exchange Mailboxes  and SharePoint sites. This can also provide hosted voicemail with auto attendant capabilities. This comes in at about $20/month ($240/year) per user
