SCCM 2012 Low Bandwidth WAN

In my test lab I have started to test  SCCM 2012 over a low bandwidth (512k Down/256k UP) WAN (using my home brewed WAN emulator) our international offices. I have placed a Distribution point at each location and am deploying updates from our main site through the DP. I have set the Primary site to only use 10% of bandwidth during business hours and 100% after business hours. Of course I have set a separate boundary group for each site based on the AD sites and IP address.

Things I found so far:

Uprade SCCM 2012 to SP1 Beta

So today I started to play with System Center Configuration Manager 2012 SP1 Beta. What I found nice for this SP from others for the System Center 2012 suite was that I was able to install it on Windows Server 2008 R2.  So far all the others required Windows 2012 RTM. I had previously installed SCCM 2012 using SQL 2012. I was able to do that here as well but it required CU 2, however CU 3 has been released so I used it. It can be found at: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2723749. Like wise WSUS 3.0 SP2 requires KB2734608 found at:http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2734608

Installing CentOS 6 Linux

Installing CentOS 6.3 Linux

CentOS Linux is a free Linux enterprise level distribution that is simple but robust. This distribution and more information is attainable from http://centos.org/. For this excersise you will need to download CentOS-6.3-x86_64-bin-DVD1.iso and ether burn it to DVD or mount it on your client virtual machine as a DVD drive.

SCCM 2012 Drivers

Boot images are used for booting into a graphical interface for imaging and capture. PE is based on Windows and lets face it, Windows needs drivers and some devices like storage controllers and network controllers are critical for operation. Without these drivers your PE boot image cannot  access the hard drive or network controller. If you are doing a network boot, access to the network controller is very important. like wise nothing will work if PE cannot access the hard drive.

SCCM 2012 Install Image Package Task Sequence

Task Sequence Wizard: Install existing image package

When you run this selection from the Task Sequence Wizard and you select this option, you are prompted to name the TS, provide a description and choose a boot image to use for it. Give it a name, A description and Choose a boot image. If you are using a 64 bit windows, make sure you use a 64 bit boot image, like wise  if you use a 32 bit windows, use a 32 bit boot image.

System Center Configuration Manager 2012 OSD & PXE

System Center Configuration Manager 2012 is a central management point for your computers and servers. It can centralize distribution of Software, Software Updates, and Operating System Distribution (OSD). Through a web interface User can have a catalog of approved software available to them for installation and reinstallation, or can request approval for other software that is available in Configuration Manager but requires approval. It also comes with Forefront Endpoint Protection 2012 which provides centralized antivirus and malware protection for  your enterprise and can be managed and reported on by Configuration Manager 2012.

Lab: Building WAN Emulator experiment

Building a WAN Emulator

With the need for a WAN emulator that could simulate Poor connections over VSat, ADSL, and other types of connection available in developing areas I set out to see what was available. There are hardware solutions out there. We already had a network Wan emulator appliance but it is limited to one network at a time, with 3 Ethernet ports, 1 management, 1 LAN A, 1 LAN B. We needed more.

SCCM 2012 Tool

SCCM 2012 Useful Tools

Here are some useful tools I have found while working with SCCM 2012. Many thinks to the developers.

Microsoft System Center 2012

Since before the release of Microsoft System Center I have been working on the deployment of this product in our environment. We have found many tricks to making it work. The components I have been working with are the System Center Configuration Manager, System Center Virtual Machine Manager, System Center Data Protection Manager and System Center Operations Manager.
